Nikkor AF-S 200-400mm VR f/4G IF-ED
A super-telephoto Zoom-Nikkor with Vibration Reduction and Silent Wave Motor, the Nikkor AF-S 200-400mm VR f/4G IF-ED combines a super-telephoto zoom reach with the advantages of Vibration Reduction for increased photographic opportunities in low light and added sharpness through reduced camera/lens motion at lower shutter speeds.
Features
- Delivers super-high performance on both film and DX format digital SLR cameras
- When mounted on a Nikon DX format camera, the lens' picture angle is 8º ~ 4º, the equivalent of 300-600mm on a 35mm [135] format camera
- Vibration Reduction (VR) system delivers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed three stops (eight times) faster* (*As determined by Nikon performance tests.)
- VR automatically detects panning as well as vertical shake
- Nikon's exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) provides swift autofocus with superior accuracy and ultra-quiet operation
- [M/A]and [M] modes allow rapid switching between AF and MF operation
- Four ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements minimize chromatic aberration, for high quality images
- Nine-blade rounded diaphragms make out-of focus elements look more natural
- Internal Focusing (IF) design for smoother focusing and great body balance
- Lens mount fitted with rubber ring that is resistant to dust and drops of water
- New slip-on type Lens Hood HK-30 (supplied) greatly reduces stray light
- Soft lens case CL-L2 supplied
Supplied Accessories
- Hood (HK-30)
- Shoulder strap (LN-1)
- Soft case (CL-L2).
Nikon's Vibration Reduction (VR) system allows photographers to shoot at shutter speeds up to three stops slower than would otherwise be possible for sharp images, either in Normal mode for hand-held shooting, or Active mode when shooting from a moving platform.
VR can also detect panning movement, an important element of many sports photography images. Early attempts at reducing the effects of camera/lens vibration in other designs prevented the photographer from shooting naturally. With Nikon's VR technology, panning as well as vertical motion vibration control have been built in from the start.
The optical design includes 24 glass elements in 17 groups manufactured to the latest environmental standards. No less than four ED glass elements ensure sharp, high contrast results with film or digital.
When used with a Nikon DX-format digital SLR the picture angle is equivalent (in 35mm film format focal lengths) to 300-600mm. Ultra-fast and quiet autofocus is enabled by the incorporation of Nikon's exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) system.
The f/4 maximum aperture and overall length remain constant at all focal lengths, while focus distances and a new 'Memory Set' button close to the camera body facilitate instant one-touch focus re-set.
Protection from the elements has been attended to with rubber seals around the F-mount bayonet and drop-in filter slot. Service repair costs resulting from front-of-the-lens impact damage have been reduced, thanks to a removable clear glass front element.
When used with the Nikon Teleconverter TC-14E II, the lens becomes a massive 420mm-840mm on a Nikon D-series digital SLR - still with rapid autofocus, thanks to Nikon's superior low light camera sensitivity at an effective constant aperture of f/5.6.
The weight of the new lens is just 3200g. This is some 300g lighter than the AF-S Nikkor 500mm f/4D IF-ED II, a design heralded for its relatively compact dimensions and suitability to on-the-run sports photography.
Note: Because this is an AF-S VR G-type lens, there are some restrictions in compatibility with camera bodies and in available functions with some bodies. VR operation works with the Nikon F5, F100, F80, F75, F65, D2H, D1-series and D100 cameras.
